So You’re Interested in an Electrical Apprenticeship – What Should You Do?

If you’ve ever looked at a building site and thought, I’d love to be part of that, a career as an electrician could be the perfect fit. Electrical apprenticeships are in high demand across South Australia, offering a hands-on, well-paid career with long-term security.

At Tad-Mar Electrical, we’ve trained and supported dozens of apprentices—many of whom have grown into site supervisors, estimators, and project managers. Here’s what you need to know if you’re thinking about starting your electrical journey.

1. Understand What an Electrical Apprenticeship Is

An electrical apprenticeship typically runs for four years and combines on-the-job training with TAFE study. You’ll work under qualified electricians, learning how to install, maintain, and repair electrical systems across commercial and residential sites.

2. Start with a Pre-Vocational Course

While not mandatory, completing a Certificate II in Electrotechnology (available through TAFE SA) gives you a head start. It shows commitment and provides a solid foundation in electrical safety, tools, and basic wiring.

3. Apply for an Apprenticeship

You can apply directly to electrical companies or through a Group Training Organisation (GTO). At Tad-Mar, we look for motivated applicants with a great attitude, a willingness to learn, and a focus on safety.

4. Get a White Card

Before stepping onto any construction site, you’ll need a Construction Induction Card (White Card). It’s a legal requirement in South Australia and can be obtained via a short online or in-person course.

5. Be Ready to Learn and Show Up

An apprenticeship is a real job—with real expectations. Punctuality, a strong work ethic, and a commitment to learning will take you far.

The electrical trade isn’t just a job—it’s a career that opens doors. If you’re ready to get started, reach out to local contractors (like us!) and start making connections. Your future spark might be closer than you think.
